Chiropractic is one of the largest health professions available and yet many people don’t understand what we do and how we can help people. I wanted to share some common myths about Chiropractic so that you can have a better understanding of who we are.

1)   Once you see a Chiropractor you have to keep going back

Chiropractic care aims help the body heal itself by restoring normal body function. One of the many reasons many people continue going to back to see their Chiropractor after they feel better is due to them being proactive about their health and using it as preventative care.

2)   Chiropractors are not real doctors

The Chiropractic degree requires many years of studying not just about the way they treat but also about the body including full body dissection and learning how to do a full physical examination. They then have to spend many practical hours in training, writing a thesis and observing Chiropractors and other health professionals before they can qualify as a Doctor of Chiropractic.

3)   Chiropractic care is not effective

There is numerous research to show the effectiveness of  Chiropractic treatment in acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It is often recommended at the first line treatment in back pain in many clinical practical guidelines. Chiropractors aim to treat the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms.

4)   Spinal manipulations/adjustments or unsafe

Chiropractic care is drug and surgery free, which makes it one of the safest health care options available. Research has also demonstrated that neck adjustments are not the cause of a stroke like some people have wanted to suggest. At the same time it is important that a person give the Chiropractor their full health history so that they can give the appropriate treatment to prevent any complications.

5)   Chiropractors crack your bones

That sound is not your bones cracking but rather a sudden release of gasses which are caused by tiny pockets of air bubbles within the fluid that surround joints, in order to lubricate them to move better. When the joint tissues are stretched during an adjustment, these gas bubbles pop open and thus create a cracking sound.

6) Chiropractors are back and neck doctors

It is true that Chiropractors put a huge emphasis on the spine, but this does not limit our treatment to only neck and back issues. Adjustments to the vertebrae affect the nervous system which in turn helps restore whole body function. In addition to this chiropractors also treat other parts of the body from the hands and fingers to the feet and toes, sports injuries to headaches, sinus and jaw problems.
